The AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events: Rules, Terminology and Technical Specifications, Version 3

American Academy of Sleep Medicine · 2023

What this work gives Aellic

The binding scoring standard for sleep stages. It prescribes that the share of each stage in total sleep time be REPORTED — but it names no normal ranges for those shares.

Correction of 25 July 2026

The registry attributed the values “N3 15–20 %, REM 20–25 %” to the AASM. The AASM does not publish these figures; they come from the textbook chapter by Carskadon & Dement in Kryger/Roth/Dement, which gives N3 13–23 % for young adults. For normative bands, ohayon2004 is the source that holds.

The entry on the register was wrong. It was not replaced but kept — with what holds instead standing next to it.

Where this sits in the engine

This work is on the register, but nothing computes with it today — mostly because the feature it belongs to has not been built yet. It is listed so the numbers on the overview do not claim more than they carry.
